There are several ways to import into max, like .stl, .3ds, .iges, dxf etc. If U're sure the model is perfect without any gap, then .iges is quite good due to it's small size but the rendering speed would depend on the setting for accuracy of the surface U import, the other format are in mesh form, again, the greater the setting, the more mesh would be and of course, finer detail. Normally, I'll stick to .3ds, iges and .stl.
For .iges, if the model was not perfect in Rhino, sometimes the 'trim' features of the model in Max would be flipped, some can be fixed but some can't due to the degree of the surface.
