Almost no jobs for people who use software other than Maya?

When I look at the job section of many CG companies, almost all of them tell you that they prefer people that has the knowledge of using Maya, 3D Studio Max and Softimage. Even though they like your demo reel done by other softwares, they still have no use of you because you don't know how to use the softwares that they have. The only chance for Lightwave 3D users and other less popular software users to get a job in this industry is to become a freelance which is most likely very low-paid.

Hey Alex, that's the way it is in HK. I'm sorry, but I feel totally disappointed about this industry in HK. Short-sighted (or narrow vision whatever you wanna call it) and the lack of respects make the creative industry going downhill. Yeah, in the school people keep telling you that the the software skill doesn't matter, you creativity and you sence of art is no. 1.

Well, not so true. Besides them, they wants you to be a working machine just to follow orders and get minimum paid. Personally there is no studio out there but sweatshops.

Stay out of Hong Kong in this couple of years. Try to stick with the western world as long as you can.

it's not really true, software is software, basically they are doing the same thing behind the interface.... the knowledge and skill could be transferred. And there are a lot of chances for lightwave, softimage and houdini users though.

They also uses 3D Max. In fact, there're lots of places has Max positions. Some smaller shops use Lightwave, since it's cheap and full funtioning.

Well, both, Western and Hong Kong. Once you worked in a western environment, you don't want to work with orientals. no offendsive here, it's just my opinion.I just hope our chinese bosses will learn how to respect someday!
