That's not the first time they layoffed traditional animators. They did it once in 2001. I personally know couple of them actually had to learn 3d in order to get a job... the industry is changing and hand drawn animation is fading from the big screen because of time and cost to make one.

(by digitalmediafx.com) According to the LA Times, Disney is about to layoff 1,000 employees after another 3,000 volunteered to leave the company with severance packages.
According to the LA Times, "Among the areas expected to be hit hardest by the layoffs are Disney's theme parks in Anaheim and Orlando and its feature animation department, where Disney is cutting several dozen jobs and slashing salaries by 30% to 50% in response to the unit's declining profits."
The layoffs will take place by the end of July, 2001."
