of course I haven't had chance to read the new version, but then i want to say most of those mainland chinese book serve quite a different purpose if you pay attention to the example they use and the way they explain those examples.
Jeremy's book try explain some of the idea about lightings and shadowing in CG renderings, it's not just try to make stuff look real, but also understand the art of using light. It could probably be understand as a CG version of this kind of books.
Agree with Hammer, his book, as he said, is non-software-specific. You can apply all the concepts and ideas to almost any software and they still work. It lends the reader to understand the principles of lighting (or CG lighting), instead of just following instructions of how make certain lighing setup in a specific software, which is most of the mainland China books do.
