The "normal" XSI shaders are shaders that Mental Ray uses to understand the material characteristic and then output the image. When you want to use Mental Ray's superb quality rendering solution, you need to specific the 'normal' shaders in XSI.
Real time shader are programmable shaders in DirectX or OpenGL format used mainly in game engines, because they can be accelerated in real time through graphic hardware. However, DirectX/OpenGL slows down in client side with slow graphic system. And, they cannot yet do many advance rendering features like GI/FG/Caustic, SSS that are found in MR.
