To open .3ds files?

I am using 3ds max 6, and i am reading a book, there is a CD from the book which contains some .3ds files, But I cannot open it with 3ds max 6?? it just can open some .max files??
the book is by Ratner, Peter - 3D human modeling and animation

go to menu bar and chose File -> import to open the .3ds file
