1. user mental ray as the production renderer
2. use e.g. raytrace materials
3. change the properties of the objects to generate caustic (right-click on the object and go to the mental ray tab and check generate caustics).
4. Under the Indirect Illumination Tab of the Render Scene dialogue, check Caustics.... then do the test render. My experience is you need to increase the Global Energy Multiplier to a very large value in order to see the caustic effect.
