I agree, if you are making product design, NURBS is better, but that's all. If you want to make organic (e.g. human, monster...) or other models, use Editable Poly. It's extremely good and mature in max5 now! You will notice that Maya is now promoting their so-called "sub-division modeling".... it's just a tool that you can find in the early version of max.
Anyway, you can still use NURBS to create models. For learning (it's good) and you can model beautiful things (I know because I tried before).
