you can use video post in max or just do it in post (after effects,etc...)

Oh, sorry. I misread your article. The easiest way to do is to have a spot light shooting out from the pages. Set the cover to cast shadow but not the pages, so you can put a light inside or under the pages. Set your "Spotlight Parameters" to rectangle and play with the aspect to fit the size of the page. Finally, go to "Atmospheres & Effects" and add a volume light effect. Don't forget to play with the setting.
