Envolope skeleton into your geometry is the most general ways to move your character.
If you need to modify the mucles, then you have to apply morph targets with it. Morph targets is basically making the geometry change from one shape to another base on your original mesh. I don't have much knowledge with LW. But both maya and XSI works quite simple. Simply you save a shape key(record the shape of the geometry) in one post then, you move your arms for example, then you remodel a little bit to whatever the muscle should look like and save another shape key. So that when your skeleton move from 1 position to another, the geometry will morph from one shape to another at the same time.
