hi all,

just finished 2 TV commericals last weeks.
I want to share one interesting commerical here. It promote a "bread" for Mexican funeral.
It was a fun project using CG to pretend Stop Motion...

Very Interesting indeed. So the paper cutout, the bottle and the candle stand are CG, correct? Would you mind to share the method of creating the animated paper cutout? I had some thoughts in mind, wanna see if that's the way how you guys did it. :)

Timmy, I knew you would say that... :)

My first thought was animate the cutout as an alpha in AE etc... but it won't give you too much control on the final look of the animation in 3D. So my guess is that you guys create the cutout doll in AI, than import the curves into Maya. Use the curves to create a NURBS plane, then rigging it so that it bend, fold and transfrom correctly. As for the cutout animation, like the hands movements, eye blinks, etc... simply animate the curves either by moving the CV or setup blendshapes, then you're done. Of course, I'm sure you guys put alot of effort on the shading and texture as well!

Anyhow, it's a great piece of work! :)

where is other people?..... any thought?

let me say the method called " double animation"
we animate a B/W charater (special rigging setup), and then make an image sequences with Alpha channel. assign the sequences on a "Paper" Geo, and then animate the "Paper"as well.
only the paper charater is CG. the rest is live.
of course we create a CG envirnment to cast shadow, received shadow, reflection and refraction....

Haha, I'm leaving for a trip to HK and Shanghai next monday too!

Awesome man! It reminds me the good old time back in Vancouver when I was working on a 2.5D TV series called MrHell Show. Tell you what, after finishing 2 EPs I was so sick with the cutout geo and swapping shapes, haha!

It can be easily done with Driven Keys and a Image Sequence.

I agree with wingman. cutout geo is work for a simple shape but not work/good for animation. if u give the cutout geo setup to animators, they will kill u for sure.
