Slim will get you 50% of the way (more or less, depending on what you want to do). And sad to say MtoR isn't a very well-written piece of software (very surprising, seeing that it's from Pixar); for example it's very difficult to nicely blur the shadow of the packaged light shaders (easily fixed if you write a light shader using SL); also, it doesn't support other Renderman-compliant renderers like Entropy very well. To use Renderman (not just Prman) to its fullest power, you have to learn to code shaders and massage RIBs. Basic computer programming is a *required* skill for computer artists. And writing shaders, if you know what you're doing, is fun!
