Well...this is hard to anwser since different 3D software have their own special feature, but ultimately they work the same.
Maya-
It's the most popular 3D software in the cg industry. Very strong animation features, with many useful built in dynamic function such as Fluid, Particles, cloth simulation, Fur, and hair...etc. The feature of Mel also give the user a lot of room to customize many useful plug-in. Texture and Modeling is a little weak though. The rendering engine used to be really suck in Maya, but ever since Mental Ray become one of the default rendering engine, it totally change the story.
XSI-
Use to be Maya number 1 competitor, it can do almost everything what Maya can do, especially the non-linear animation system is one of their most proud features. Their rendering is also really good. Most of the artist in ILM use XSI as their standard software. The bad thing about XSI is the NOT so user friendly interface, it discourage newbie to learn.
3D studio Max-
It’s one of the most popular software in the gaming industry, their animation system mostly design for game animation. Many artist in Asia also love this software. The polygon modeling and texture system in Max is pretty good, but the animation system is a little weak compare to Maya or XSI. One of the biggest advantage for Max user is there are tons and tons of plug-in and scripts out there you can utilize. So you don’t have to spend time to create your own script.
Of course there are a lot more good software out there you can chose such as lightwave (awesome polygon and sub-D modeling), Z-brush (Incredible organic modeling tool), Hash animation master (simple modeling tool, but awesome animation feature and most importantly, it’s really cheap!!)…..each software has their own hotkey and navigation system, it’s almost impossible to master them all. There was a time I have to use Max and Maya at the same time, I always mix up with all the command and hotkey and it just gave me a big headache!
I strongly suggest you should first spend all your time to master ONE program, and later when you have time you can explore others. As I said earlier, though they have different special feature, they ultimately work the same. For today cg industry, I would recommend Maya or 3D max, because it’s the most popular software and it’s easier to find a job. XSI is a good program, but not many company use them, it make it hard to find a job.
Anyway, remember software is just a tools, you skills is the key. It may only take you 5 or 6 month to get familiar with a program, but it take you years and years to polish your skill!
