Shade was very often used in Japan, you will see so many rendering being drawn via Shade, the technique and shading method is different from traditional one we've get used to, I don't like their rendering technique b'cas its too perfect, I'd prefer something with flaw and defect. But to be fair, they paid a lot of effort in modelling and scene control, but lighting is too sharp all the time, that's the common problem for most Shade users.
You will also notice that the rendering drawn by the readers of GW were very skillful, may be better than some full-time CG creator in H.K.
