The first basic requirement is that you must speak very good English if you want to work in western country. (japanese in japan...etc); You need to communicate with your team everyday. Secondly, you must have a very outstanding profilio; otherwise, what is the reason to hire you instead of local people. If a company hires a foreigner, she need to look after your working visa and moving expense....etc.

here is my tip:
Most people will study a post-graduated program in other country (eg. USA) and then look for a job after school. That way is more easy to get into the industry because most schools have a good connection between other CG companies. Also, you are already in their country. Most of the case they pay for the airticket for candidate within north america or europe... You may need second, third or more interviews for a job.... good luck :)

thank you very much!!

  :?:

North America (USA and Canada) is the best for HK people because of English speaking country. Most majoy CG studios are located there.
Working visa is not a problem as long as you get a job but only for 1 years and extend 1 more year (total 2 yrs) in canada. After 2 yrs, you must leave the country unless you must become a permanent resident.

That right! This is the best way work to other countries. Cananda and US are the good choice. Also you need SAT or TOEFL test to entry to US collages. Please perpare this frist! :D

Andrew Lee
這間學校(Bournemouth University in UK.

Thank you very much!!

Hi Web_sdas,

It seems most of the CG companies and universities are located in USA and Canada. But I don't have much information about there. You better ask the people who works over there such as Mr. Timmy. Bournemouth University in UK is the only one I familiar with, I can give you a little details of the course.

這間學校(Bournemouth University in UK.

The MA 3D Computer Animation course in Bournemouth University seems quite good compare to others in UK. The course gets full earlier than other universities. I remember it was already full 7 mouths before it started when the year I applied, so if you plan to do it this year, you better to apply ASAP. The school fee was something like 8,000 pounds (about 116,000 HKD) in 2 years ago. I am not sure how much now. Check it out in their website.

It is a 1 year course, which splited in 3 terms. The 1st term is very basic, just for those who haven't touched 3D before. You will be working on 2 simple animation projects, something like bouncing ball....

There is a group project in 2nd term. You can group with the people from the same course or from the other course such as, MSC computer animation or MA Digital effect....

No lessons in 3rd term. You can concentrate on your final project at home. No one bother you. Tutors are quite open mind, you can do whatever you want.

Apart from the general CG stuff like modeling, texturing, animating.... You also need to study other subjects such as, maths, scripting, design theory, story broading, sketching, cinematograph.... Not much written work need to be done.

The course leader has got a very good connection with the UK industry. Almost every Friday, they invite professional CG people from the big company for lecture. Such as FrameStore, Glass Work, Aardman, Climax, Vanguard, EA, The Mill, MPC, Blitz.... This is one of the best parts I like this course.

Same as most of other universities in UK, the tutors in Bournemouth are not very good in teaching, and they haven’t got much experience in industry, you shouldn't expect you could learn much from them. Especially when you have been already working in CG for a while. You probably will find you know and do better than the tutors in certain things. This course is better for those who have not much CG experience. But if you could afford it, I would recommend to study abroad wherever in UK or Canada. It is a priceless experience.

My opinion is, don't just concern how much you could learn CG in there, I know you are very interested in CG, but don’t put CG too important in your life. Sometimes is good to walk away from where you was born, you better go out to see the world, to explore different experience in your life. The knowledge from the book is not the most important thing. The most important thing is to get your eye open wider. You would get much more than you expected, seeing how the companies present their works, sharing what you know, meeting people from all over the world, living in foreign country, get closer to the local culture, get home sick, get drunk in western street at night.... You may have great inspiration or idea from those special feeling. Then your work might look different from other piece of CG works.

The CG in UK seems getting better and better, more and more Hollywood CG were done in UK.

About working in UK. If there is a company hire you, and they apply work permit for you. You will be able to work in this country, until your company fire you. After 3 years working in UK, you are qualified to apply as a citizen...... It sounds simple, but it is really not. Most of the companies don't even consider hiring a non-EU people. Because it takes time, loads of paper works, and also costs money to do work permit. Some companies like Aardman and Vanguard say in their website that they hire European only. That's the reason very rare to see chinese people work here. It is very difficult, but is not impossible.

There is a graduation show every year in summer. A lot of companies come to look for new people. I was super super lucky that I was hired by a company in my graduation show, they needed a large number of junior CG Artist urgently. Otherwise I would have no chance to stay in this country.

I hope it does help

Good luck, just ask me if you have any more questions.

:)

"The most important thing is to get your eye open wider"
