This is a difficult question... It can be very simple (model river then keyfram texture) to very difficult (particle, realflow, glu3d...) how realist do you want?

Try it and see if this is working for you. You can try with the ocean texture if you want a better water look.

You can just simply model a plain surface, and use a fractal (noise) shader to interact the bump and displacement to the surface.

He didn't use the ocean texture because it doesn't exist when he's making the tutorial (around 2001...)

Why can't you follow the tutorial? Which part of it you don't understand?

i know that he use soft bodies...
texture problem, he use ramp texture and bump texture..
he use expression, what is the expression??

ediosyam, I didn't watch the whole video, so I don't know what expression he used... the bump map doesn't need to be 3d texture, it could be whatever the water texture you will use. as for the bump value, you have to try it youself, it's not that differicult, right?

are you asking how he did the softbody? just pick the surface and select create softbody..., then apply some force to it, that's it...... if you're asking for particle dynamics, Maya help has just the information you needed. eidosyam, have you tried to follow the tutorial? Let's forget about the many textures and utilites he used, do you understand what he's trying to do? The basic idea is to offset a texture in U or V on a NURBS surface. all the softbody/utilites are just there to create a better look.

Can I teach you? I'm afraid I'm not qualify for that... there's so many talented, experienced artists here. I think what you have to learn is the problem solving skill, that's one very important skill when you work with CG. Ask the right question is another key skill. Don't stop trying... you'll learn alot through the problem solving process.

I'll try to watch the gnomon video when I have time, hopefully I can mark down what he used in the tutorial...
