cs and cg is tightly related to each other, no worries.
i think it's only a matter of personal interest. not every people like/need/suitable to study programming and tech stuff.
the most important thing is to find what you love, and go ahead.
If a cg artist knows nothing about programming and the math side of cg, many things will be just a myth to him and he won't be comfortable in a script-based environment. Afterall, we are working with the computer, it's always better to know your tool better and it makes you easier to get a job, too. I believe the best cg artist has a perfect blend of art and tech attributes. ok,...but this is just what i believe.
