cs and cg is tightly related to each other, no worries.

i think it's only a matter of personal interest. not every people like/need/suitable to study programming and tech stuff.

the most important thing is to find what you love, and go ahead.

If a cg artist knows nothing about programming and the math side of cg, many things will be just a myth to him and he won't be comfortable in a script-based environment. Afterall, we are working with the computer, it's always better to know your tool better and it makes you easier to get a job, too. I believe the best cg artist has a perfect blend of art and tech attributes. ok,...but this is just what i believe.

art and science is equally important for cg
neither one shall be overweighted
that's why cg is a team-working industry, gathering art and science people to contribute their best
of course it'll be great that one can achieve both side, but it's up to one's interest and ability

what i disagree is only "cs is far better than cm", it should be equally important. and it really depends on the student himself.

Given the choice of cm or cs as your university study, I should have said one should learn cs in a university environment, and a degree or master in cs usually makes u stand out from many applicants. Moreover, my experience is it's really painful to learn the tech stuff all by yourself without a solid tech background and a well-trained mind. My impression is cm is kind of a general degree and it can be learnt anywhere at any time, some talented people don't even need to learn it in school. Correct me if i am wrong, again it's just my own experience and opinions.

For any serious production, no one is doing anything creative except a few guys on top. Got some art sense help you to do better animation or build a better model, according to the comment of your sup. But most of the time you just won't need to be creative in these kind of creative industry.

programming is not like super difficult to learn but most of self learner don't have the sense and skill required for complex, group developed software. Many of my friend taught themselves maya API and wrote bunch of plug ins but it will be impossible for them to join a team to write something like massive, which required CS background. It's more than just the language.
