文章ianhk » 20日 2月 2006年, 11:26

請大家(業內人士,學生,freelance) 比意見

我現在系 US 讀緊animation(University, BA degree)

lightware, 3D studio max 要學嗎??

學歷, 成績 重要嗎??
如我 1-2 年後有 experience 返HK
可以做咩??

其實我又識 photoshop, illustrator, html...

我可以做 instructor of animation or tech suport for other software嗎??

最important 我有D experience 系o米就吾會 like the newbies HK$3千個月??

Actually HK$8000+ 每月 穩定上班時間 我都ok!

請指教, Thanks!!

Stable working hours doesn't apply to our industry. Especially in Hong Kong. When you come close to deadline, everyone would be working 24/7,(a bit extreme, but you get the idea).

I think most people would agree with me that it really doesn't matter which 3D packages you use. 3D packages are only your tools. It's the skill and talent that matters. All 3D packages do the same thing (at least most of them are), so you don't really need to worry too much. Besides, employers hire people's talents, not just base on what packages you use. =P For me, I know XSI and a bit of maya, but the company that hires me uses 3dmax and I know nothing of it. =P

Hong Kong's economy is getting better now, I don't think there are a lot of places that offer 3k for newbies anymore! I am a newbie myself and I think my pay is ok la...but don't expect too much...

If you are planning to teach, and you want some decent pay, I know nowadays many public technical institutes require their instructors to have at least a Master or higher in education. Correct me if I am wrong, but that's seems to be the case for most of the institutes that give degrees......

Another thing, it's good to know everything, but in my opinion, I still think specialize in a single field is what makes you valuable...well...that's just me...

That's a 50/50 question. If a studio only use Max, they normally don't want to hire someone who just use Maya... As we all know, many production has tight deadline, the studios just don't want to invest time for an artist to learn a complex program like XSI, Max, Maya... from scrach, except this artist show excellent skill on some aspects. Some studios may do that if they have budget and time for the project or they have their own software/interface (eg. Pixar, PDI...). Let say if you're the boss, you have people who can use the program your studio is using and has skill, and someone who has kill but knows nothing about the program, who would you hire?

Another thing, it's good to know everything, but in my opinion, I still think specialize in a single field is what makes you valuable...well...that's just me...

I believe that depends on who you are and what your interest is. Specialist seems to be easier to fit in the big studio kind of setup. The big studio wants to have people to become the nuts and bolts of their massive pipeline. Small to med sized studio on the other hand loves to have the "jack of all trades" kind of people because they can help out others when they have free time.

well, yeah i agree it's a 50/50 question....but what I am trying to say is that don't be too worry about which software to use. If you have the skill, picking up the tools is not a problem. Beside, it's really hard to find a talented person that knows every software. That's just my opinion...nothing personal..

In regard to specialization, lemme re-phrase it a bit, it's important to know other trades in this field esp. in hk or smaller studios, I find that absolutely true and important, otherwise you'll starve to death =(...but also it's a good thing to specialize one of them and that's wut i am saying....I mean you can't be good in everything, there's just too many things to learn, and not a lot of people can do that...Don't get me wrong stan, Im just giving my views to it =P

You could be, but models for product design are more strict since most of the time the models will use for CAD output... In fact many of the good modeler I know came from a product design background. I'm just speaking out of my head, Siegfried and Andrew here are the ones you should ask.
