Unwrap UVW

Hi, all. I am new to this forum and have the following question:

Do anyone knows how to properly unwrap the bolt I attach?

In your case, you can select your original UV (your UV of individual model) with "Polygon Mode" in UV Editor.
By the way, you can have a look of this tutorial. It demonstrates the UV technique of "Point-to-point seams" and really useful in most of cases.

Thank you for your help!


The tutorial is wonderful. However, it still can't solve my problem.

I have tried used Box Mapping under Normal Mapping, Edit Seams and even Cylindrical Mapping methods, but the the problem persist on the sides on the bolt model. The UVs over there are still not very ideal.


Do your guys have other suggestion?

Sorry, I have tried many times , but it keeps saying file with .max extension cannot be uploaded!

It dawned on me that you squared off the UVs by using the Freeform Tool in the Edit UV window.

Am I right?

I often wonder what are the number of seams should be left on a model? I have been modelling a chopper and after I flattened the UVs and stitched some of them together, I find that there are still some of them left and I am considering if they should be kept.


I have attended several job interviews for CG jobs, but some of them said that my portfolio was not rich enough! I may post the link of my portfolio on the forum in order to gather valuable opinions from you guys.

Yes, I used Freeform Tool to edit the UV that I want. For the UV types, it depends on your observation and experience. The checker mapping can help you much to figure out the relationship between seams and UV edit.

For your case, here're the screen captures.

1. You can reset all the settings by "Convert to Editable Poly"
2. Assign UV Unwrap to model and use of "Point to point seams"
3. Make sure you edit your UV in vertex mode if you are using point to point seams.
4. Good use of "Pelt Map" under the Peel category. Normally, you can choose"Commit" in the simple UV"
5. Edit the UV scaling and proportion in Free form Mode.
6. We always assign a "Checker" map into the model in order to preview the UV scaling and connection among each single UV element. (two UV elements in your case).
